Tigard, OR defines an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) as a self-contained residence located on the same property as a primary residence. ADUs must be smaller than the main house, and have their own separate cooking, sleeping, and bathroom facilities.
ADUs can be attached to the primary home by constructing an addition or converting space in existing structures such as a garage, attic or basement, or they can be detached as a stand-alone unit. ADUs provide complete and permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation.
